One man’s trash is another man’s hope

The Man in the Mirror

Whether you are Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim or atheist

shouldn’t make a difference in whether or not you help.

You help because it’s the right thing to do.

THAT is what Jesus would do.

In a time when there were no laws to protect battered women, no shelters, no family that would take her in, the founder of this organization chose to leave her abuser and live in the streets with her two small children. They slept in abandoned street cars, in the backs of empty tractor trailers, on the pews of open door churches, yes even in cardboard boxes. When they were lucky enough, they had a car to sleep in. Her third and youngest child was born in the streets.

She begged; she borrowed; she stole. She sold her blood, her body, and at times she sold her soul Most people won't understand what that last phrase means. She would do anything to protect her kids from the abuse no matter the cost. She never imagined they would remain on the streets for five years.

She knew even then -- because of the many people that gave them shelter from the cold, fed them when they were hungry, gave her children shoes and coats when they needed them -- that somehow she would pay it forward. Somehow she would do everything within her power to see that there was no need for homelessness unless by choice, and not chosen because of an abusive relationship.”

Over the years, she would allow the homeless to come into her home to shower, wash their clothes, and have a hot meal. She always made sure they left with full bellies. She was frustrated, feeling that those small gestures were not enough.

About 3 years ago, she realized it was within her power to change the situation but she knew she could not do it by herself. “Together we can make a huge impact on the homeless, on the poverty- stricken, on the abused, the neglected, the forgotten. Three years in the making, it has come full circle and is now the Yetzer Ha-Tov ministries which pays forward what I was given.”

God doesn’t want alms. He wants action.
